The Main Tattoo Styles
Classic Americana
Old-school style characterized by bold outlines and not too large of a color palette. Classic. They’re closely tied to the ocean and nautical imagery, fierce predatory animals, pinup female figures or combinations of hearts, roses, and daggers. Clean and crisp. The tattoo style was popularized by Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins in the 1930s
New school
These tattoos are like a crazy comic book on your body. Characterized by vivid and bold bright colors. Mythical worlds full of chaos with charactered animals. Many custom pieces are done in this style.
Japanese
Known for having large images that cover the entirety of the back, this style has been around for centuries and has maintained its popularity. One popular style is called Irezumi. Peacocks and roaring tigers with cherry blossoms and Katanas are popular images seen in this style.
Black and grey
Something as simple as watering down black ink to make a wide spectrum of shades can create some of the most beautifully intricate tattoos. With so much dimension and depth in these pieces, many artists prefer to work in black and grey only, and for good reason.
Portraiture
A sub-set of the realism genre (which is just like it sounds—realistic renderings of imagery). Artists can create some eerily accurate portraits within this style. Whether it be your favorite actor or idol, or a loved one that's passed on that you want to remember forever, this style when done correctly, is simply amazing.
Stick and poke
Artists use a single needle to create simple designs. Popularized by DIY tattoo-ers, think prison tattoos. But when done by a skilled hand, these can be amazingly beautiful pieces of art. Small decorative patterns and thick bold lines.
Realism
If there is something very specific you want to display, realism can help you achieve it. Whether colorful or black and white this classic tattoo style can be of anything from scenery to objects, animals, or people.
Blackwork
Blackwork was originally derived from the OG tribal tattoos, made of thick and bold black lines in a variety of geometric shapes. Stunning visuals make up these masterpieces. This is where you will find things like sacred geometry tattoos.
Biomechanical
These tattoos use the unique flow of a person's body to construct the shape. Meant to mimic machinery that can be hidden within the skin. Alien and mechanical inspired images often cover the arms and legs. This style is typically done freehand.
Geometric
These are very popular right now and can encompass either geometric alone or geometric and organic, usually floral elements. The contrast between the sharp measured lines of the geometric style paired with the flowing curves of organic elements makes for a beautiful tattoo.
Realistic Trash Polka was created by Germany’s Buena Vista Tattoo Club. Created by Simone Plaff and Volko Merschky, it’s instantly recognizable for its collage-like structure, intricate and sampling from printed materials—from photography to handwriting, paint splashes to type-writing. Bold blacks and splashes of color, mainly red.
Surrealism
Sublime fantasy. This style leaves the artist with the most material to work with. Think modern day Picasso. Anything goes here and it often feels like you crossed over into the mind of an evil genius's dreams.
